Hampton Seeks Public Input to Eliminate Traffic Fatalities
City launches community survey to advance Vision Zero traffic safety plan
The City of Hampton has opened a public survey to collect community input for its Vision Zero Traffic Safety Action Plan. The initiative is part of the city’s efforts to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on local roadways.
The survey, available online through Monday, August 18, invites residents, commuters, business owners, and visitors to share their experiences and concerns related to roadway safety and mobility. Responses will help inform the plan’s mission statement and support the development of its goals.

The survey asks participants about their relationship to Hampton and identifies specific safety concerns, including issues such as speeding, inadequate lighting, and sidewalk accessibility. It also addresses common mobility challenges, such as difficulty making left turns or walking and bicycling in certain areas.
Participants are asked about their travel habits, support for the city’s draft Vision Zero statement, and agreement with proposed goals—such as improving pedestrian and vehicle mobility, increasing accessibility, and enhancing coordination on traffic safety. The survey includes questions on the feasibility of objectives aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries over the next 10 to 20 years.
Additional sections of the survey focus on bus stop safety, transit service gaps, and whether respondents would access a dashboard tracking transportation safety projects. Demographic information, including ZIP code, is also collected from Hampton residents.
Vision Zero is a strategy developed in Sweden in the 1990s to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries while improving overall transportation safety. The approach recognizes that human error is inevitable and that road systems should be designed to minimize the risk and consequences of those errors. The program uses a Safe System Approach, which includes components such as safe road users, vehicles, speeds, roads, and post-crash care. It emphasizes shared responsibility, proactive planning, and system redundancy. The strategy is data-driven and involves collaboration among government agencies, transportation professionals, and community stakeholders.
While Vision Zero is a widely used term, similar strategies may be known as Road to Zero or Toward Zero Deaths. These efforts are aligned with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Roadway Safety Strategy.
